Warhol Self-Portrait Fetches $38M In ‘Longest Lot In History’ At Christie’s New York Auction

An action-packed post-war and contemporary art auction at Christie’s Wednesday night in New York was topped off with a $38.45 million self-portrait by the king of pop art, Andy Warhol. After an intense, 16 minute bidding war, an unidentified private European buyer took home the spoils.

Forbes was present at Christie’s headline spring auction which brought together New York and the world’s major art players. The exciting evening contrasted with Sotheby’s Tuesday night auction that, as Forbes’ Hannah Elliott noted, disappointed many. The peak of the night was provided by two buyers going on a bidding war for who else but Andy Warhol’s 1963-1964 self-portrait. Christie’s post-war & contemporary art sale topped expectations, with 62 out of 65 lots sold for a total of $301.7 million.

Strange Random Andy Warhol Quote:
If you want to know all about Andy Warhol, just look at the surface of my paintings and films and me, there I am. There’s nothing behind it.
