“Crisis? What is a crisis?”–Sepp Blatter

Back on May 11, FIFA president Sepp Blatter proclaimed that the vote-selling scandal that has devastated world football and its governing body had to be resolved in time for the June 1 presidential election. It didn’t quite work out that way. The accusations and counter-accusations continued unabated. Finally, Blatter was reelected president with no opposition. Candidate Mohammed Bin Hammam had withdrawn amid accusations that he too was a direct participant in the corruption. But getting elected is one thing; leadership is another. In a news conference on Monday, Blatter was described as “halting and rather defensive,” continuing to aver that allegations by former Football Association FA head Lord David Triesman lacked evidence and even dismissing characterizations of FIFA’s situation as a “crisis.”
